Getting The Motorcycle License Tag On The Road Has Been Painful
March 23rd, 2009

A real red letter day!
I remarked in one of my last columns that I almost hate to hear the phone ring.
The Foundation is perennially the bearer of good news; please consider what follows next as nothing but good news.
Our design team received new color proofs from the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles on Friday afternoon, March 20; the team called us this morning with their “final selection” on the correct color and we share the event with you today, Monday, March 23. They are now on their way back to Raleigh to get the presses rolling.
This many-month process has all been accomplished without medication prescribed for my pain. Thank every one of you for your patience and understanding!

So, can I order tag on-line. I went to NC DMV site, but do not see BRP for motorcycles
Been out on the motorcycle most of the day. Hope to make it to the Parkway on Sunday.
Send us a picture of you with the tag! You will be the first!

My tag just came in the mail today. It should be on the VROD in an hour and I will be out and about showing off the new tag.
We have received word from NCDMV that the motorcycle licencse tags have been received today from the Bureau of Prisons (where they are manufactured) into the specialty tag offices at NCDMV. “They are being processed” and prepared for mailing.
We will advise you as soon as we know that the tags are being mailed.
Thank you for your continued patience

The Division of Motor Vehicles has received the required 300 applications for the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation motorcycle license plate. The Division of Motor Vehicles has been working with the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation to create the plate with the design and colors that they have requested. Please keep in mind that this is the first specialty motorcycle license plate that will be issued by the Division of Motor Vehicles; therefore, it is a new manufacturing process for the Department of Corrections. Specialty motorcycle plates were not issued in the past because the plates were so small and if the letters were embossed, there was only enough space on the plate for two numbers. With the new digital printing of special plates, we are able to create a specialty motorcycle plate that will allow space for a maximum of four numbers.
The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation and the North Carolina Highway Patrol have approved the sample Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation motorcycle plate and the plates are being manufactured at this time. We hope to receive them from the manufacturer within the next two to three weeks.
If I can assist you further, please let me know.
Thanks,
Kay Hatcher
My tag was to expire May 15 and I renewed a couple weeks ago so my Parkway tag would not be stopped because of the renewal not being paid. A couple of weeks I was told they were being made and then they go to the hwy patrol to approve. Then they would ship to us. I can’t wait until it arrives in the mail.
HAS ANYONE RECIVER THEIR PLATES YET. OR IS DMV STILL GRARING UP?
UPDATE ON TAG
May 1, I spoke with the NC Department of Motor Vehicles this morning – special tag division – for a report. Their answer:
“They are over at the prison and are working as hard as they can to get them out.”
I guess the paint needs to dry …
We will keep you posted as we get any official news. Our offer to do something special for all you folks at Tuggle Gap is still good. Have a safe weekend. Remember to Enjoy the View, but Watch the Road.

The only “memorabilia tags” available is the “RIDE” tag which is available for the front of an automobile. It can be found here:

There is no mention of South Carolina getting a tag. I would imagine that the Parkway being a NC asset, they would not be interested. This would take an action by the state legislature.
I didn’t see that the Tags were in production on the Facebook pages.
I just renewed my “May” tag this week. It would be cool if I got my tag before our Spring Fling ride next weekend.
DID DMV STARTED THE PRESSES YET. AND HAS ANYONE RECIVED THEIR PLATES YET??????
OR IS IT THE OLD THE CHECK IN THE MAIL?
I glad about the tags, you people aren’t the only one’s that paid the piper last year……we’ve been waiting this long so be patient and one day soon, the tag will show up in your mailbox and you will be smiling ear to ear !!!
My tag is up for renewal in May. Who do I contact? Should I go on to the DMV and get the regular tag or will the BRP tags be available?
Thanks,
Regenia Denny
Can I buy tags as memorabilia? or do I need to own a motorcycle??? I purchased Bicentennial car tags in Vermont but it only went on the front of my car since it had not numbers.
Thanks
Any mention of South Carolina getting the tag?
Will we be contacted by the Foundation or by NCDOT? Will the tags come in the mail or should we pick them up at an assigned location? How do we find out if we got the personalized tag that we selsected and which choice?
I shall display my tag proudly!
Thanks for all the work you did getting these ‘going.’ I’ve been waiting since Oct of ‘07…..I am really looking forward to “showing it off!”
My tag just renewed the end of March. When can I expect my new plate and will it have the new sticker with it?
You will know as soon as I know – promise.

Sorry to say, BUT “WHEN” WILL WE RECIVE OUR PLATES. We all Know HOW slow the DMV is. A FIRM date WOULD BE NICE. before we have to SELL ours bikes to pay our TAXES.
We have been told by the NC DMV that the motorcycle tags are officially in production.
Go figure!!!
We think they are on their way …

In those immortal words spoken by Bill Clinton (NO! – not those words), “I feel your pain.” You’ve hated to hear the phone ring, I’ve started being afraid to go out in public.
But, YES, it has been more than worth it. As I’ve told people before, I’ve put on 90,000 miles since I got my bike in July, 2005. I wish I could say that most of those miles were either on the Parkway, or at least in the mountains. Alas, most of them have been on the road between Raleigh and the mountains. My brain seems to ignore these, however, and allows me to feel that the mountains have been my riding home.
Kick stands up, and let’s ride!
A happy day!! And THANK YOU to everyone that signed at least’one more up’. We earned this one tag at a time…..
YeaaaaaHHHH! Glad to hear we will get our BRP tags. Here’s another one that will complete going “End to End” this year. Thank you for your persistence seeing this program through. New site is amazing. Great Job!
Over the years I have logged many miles on the BRP. Each visit from the Triad opens a new experience for me and my many friends. I look forward to receiving my new tag and displaying it proudly throughout North America!
Bravo! You’ll see mine go “End to End” soon after recieving it. Thanks to you for making this happen!
Tom Kelley asked about final receipt date – that information will posted here as soon as it is available.
Has the final receipt date been established for the tag yet? I have had my application and fee in since January 2008.
Thanks for the good news! Looking forward to some good rides on the parkway with that plate backing me up! Carpe diem!
Special Thanks to Lynne Fletcher @ the BRP Foundation. It’s been a long road, but one worth waiting on!
Yes, the tag will most certainly be available then.
Thanks for the motorcycle tag information. I’ve been waiting for mine since January.
My tag is due for renewal in August. Will the new tags be available?
