Thank you for the great advice! My husband, Clyde Kessler hikes up and down the Blue Ridge Parkway to research birds and butterflies. I have done a lot of hiking myself. It is great exercise!

It has been several months since my wife and I became aware that Bluffs Lodge would not be open for the summer of 2011. Now we are waiting to find out if the Lodge will "return to life" this year (2012) so we might be able to return to the place we feel is maybe the closes to Heaven on Earth as any place we know. We have been going to the Bluffs Lodge ever year one to three weeks since our children were very young, have given both of our (now) adult children gifts of two overnights to take a friend so they could enjoy returning to their childhood playground. We have often celebrated our last several wedding aniversaries (now #46) while overlooking the beautiful valleys and mountains of the area. Please do all you can to reopen this very special lodge on Bluffs Mountain so we can make our way down to the Coffee Shop early each morning.

It would be great to see what could be done for bike lanes as well, but a reduced speed would re-enforce the idea of the parkway being a beautiful scenic route. I imagine that the original thought behind the road was to not think about how fast one traveled it, but the journey itself. A slower speed would reiterate that as well as help keep cyclist safe. There is room for all.
I feel that cyclist are a big enough group on the parkway that their thoughts should be weighted. I have spent time and money along the towns and stops up on and just off the parkway.
I have ridden the Blue Ridge parkway and surrounding areas manytimes on my motorcyle. I am also a fan of visiting national parks. I am looking for the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area National Passport cancellaton stamp. I understnad that you have one at your facility. If so, can you send me a copy of the cancellation stamp?

Thank you for your assistance.

The elevation certainly does play a big role in the change of color. We just came back from a short trip to the mountains on Saturday and after seeing that the tops of the mountains had changed and the valleys had not we decided to come back at a later time for our fall foliage photography this year. We are probably just a little anxious for the color change this year!

I am almost 75 will they ban me from the parkway when I become 75? whay not spend a little of that money on some of the other parks. maybe on some trails that are in bad need of some work. I cant even find any groop that you can voulunteer to work with

This sounds great. I love to enter photography competitions.

We are going on a trip very soon beginning around Wythville Virginia, and going all the way up to skyline drive in order to photograph the fall foliage.

We hope that the colors are changed by then.

We have a new Canon 24mm f/1.4 lens to match with a 5D Mark II and are really excited to get some of our best fall foliage photography shots yet.

Will keep you posted.

My son and I came here around this time and we were amazed that the Rhododendrons were still in bloom. We went to Linville falls and hiked all the way down to the lower basin, through this path there were beautiful Rhododendrons all along the trail. It was a beautiful experience.

We shared many of our pictures from this area on our website, The pedals of the rhododendron's which lined the trail seemed almost surreal.

we had a great time here.

The wildlife exhibit is nice and more than I expected.

Hey Scott. I agree. Travelers speeding on the Parkway is one of its biggest problems. Many times I drive along to visit the Moses Cone / Price Park area and am frightened because so many autos do not yield to bicyclists. It *is* a 35mph zone through there, curvy, and a steep climb, yet people are constantly getting right up on my rear end coming out of nowhere. When they pass in the double-lines and rev off knowing they are hitting at least 60mph... it's a pain in the butt. And... I'm in a car! I feel for the cyclists. Someone nervous could easily crash out or get run over. As the Parkway rangers say... "Enjoy the views, but watch the road." Great wisdom for all forms of mobility: bicyclists, through-hikers, motorcyclists, and those who like to just mosey along in their autos.

When they pass in the double-lines and rev off knowing they are hitting at least 60mph… it’s a pain in the butt. And… I’m in a car! I feel for the cyclists. Someone nervous could easily crash out or get run over. As the Parkway rangers say… “Enjoy the views, but watch the road.” Great wisdom for all forms of mobility: bicyclists, through-hikers, motorcyclists, and those who like to just mosey along in their autos.

Having bicycled all 470 miles this year. It's too impractical to build a bike lane, and not needed. Plenty of room for cars and bikes. A 35mph speed limit is needed in Asheville and Roanoke. Hey, it's a park, not a short cut.

This weather page sounds like a great resource, and a real improvement over the last method, since it can be so specific about weather details for each of our areas along the Parkway. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Thanks for posting this information about the new book on day hikes. We're often asked for suggestions about where visitors can go to enjoy our area, and other than the 'tried and true' locations, I didn't know where to direct them. Now I can tell them about this book - and I can get a copy for us too! ;-)

With the new editions smaller "pocket-size", it's much easier to carry with me in my day pack making it more useful than the prior edition. He also has a more in-depth version, but I use it for planning and then usually photo-copy the hike to take with me for convenience.

Sorry about the delayed response. According to the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation, the posters are now only available in Parkway Visitor Center Gift Shops and Bookstores operated by Eastern National along the Parkway. I know there is only a limited supply left and I'm pretty sure there were a few left at the Moses Cone Visitor Center a couple of weeks ago.

This is so sad. My wife and I have been coming to Bluffs for 31 consecutive years. Each year we met people who have been coming longer. Some years we visited twice. It is such a peaceful and pristine place. We will miss not being there this year.

My husband, Clyde Kessler, is working with the Blue Ridge Discovery Group to promote the region. He has been studying this area since his childhood and spends many hours finding and photographing butterflies with photographer Bruce Grimes. He spends much of his time promoting this beautiful mountain region.

@Wally Sexton Wally, Please see previous comments containing links to the tunnel heights. September is a wonderful time of year to travel as the weather is still warm, and traffic isn't quite as heavy as you would find during October leaf season.

You may want to contact Parkway headquarters directly with any concerns you may have about traveling the Parkway in your 24' motorhome. 828-271-4779

I have never been to the Blue Ridge parkway and wonder if it can be traveled in a 24' motorhome and if September is a pretty good time to make the trip. Is there ample pull off area parking for motorhomes and is the road width ok for a small motorhome. Is there camping in the park along the way? Thanks so much for any info.

I have a Plott Hound and he is the best dog! Great with friends kids, other dogs, but also protective.

I was worried because I have a 3 year old male (dobbie) But they get a long great. I did have to get a harness (made by the same company who does the gentle leader) I got the one that loops around his front legs (because he pulls, and is very very strong for 3 months old!)

IF you get a plott it is very important to socialize your puppy with other dogs and people.

I rode for the 1st time on the parkway last September. I was astounded as to the IDIOTS I encountered on cycles riding like TOTAL JERKS!!! I had this one FOOL who when he went by me probably around 80MPH stick his right leg out as if to kick me over. I was behind a pickup truck and we were doing the speed limit. I hoped I would come upon this "Death Wish" moron finding him "road kill" along the way. IDIOTS like he and others should be prosecuted to the FULL extent of the law! I'm sure other riders have encountered these "low-lifes". C'mon NC Hwy Patrol/Park Rangers...CRACK DOWN on these imbeciles who make a safe, fun ride for those of us who DO OBEY the speed limit(s) on the parkway a SAFER and more enjoyable ride than having to worry about when a "pack of thugs" are going to come up & around DECENT, LAW-ABIDING riders and harass us!!! Enough is enough!

I’m sure other riders have encountered these “low-lifes”. C’mon NC Hwy Patrol/Park Rangers…CRACK DOWN on these imbeciles who make a safe, fun ride for those of us who DO OBEY the speed limit(s) on the parkway a SAFER and more enjoyable ride than having to worry about when a “pack of thugs” are going to come up & around DECENT, LAW-ABIDING riders and harass us!!! Enough is enough!

I just learned that the Lodge and Coffee Shop will not be open this year. I am so sad and disappointed. My family and several of our friends come to the lodge every May for the week-end before Mothers Day. I look forward to this trip all year. it has been one of our favorite places to go. My grandaughter has enjoyed playing over those hills from the time she could walk. Just not going to be the same. Sure hope they will reopen it in the future.

Late, but I just became aware of the expected closing of Bluffs Lodge & Coffee Shop for this 2011 season with no one contracted to lease and manage the facilities on the Parkway. "Forever Resorts" now takes on a new meaning. About 33 years ago our family of 4 was driving a return trip from Asheville to our Greensboro home at the time and had already talked about needing to exit the beautiful Parkway to find lodging. To our great surprise we unexpectively saw the Bluffs Lodge & Coffee Shop sign posted on the Blue ridge Parkway just before facility's entrances. Not knowing the Lodge would often have "no vacancy" due to its popularity, we checked-in and were very pleased to get one of the two "family rooms" where the children were able to sleep in the two bunk converted walk-in closet at an unbelievable overnight cost of around $21.00. We soon learned we were quite lucky since we did not have a reservation. With no TVs or phones in the rooms we spent quality family time walking the meadows and hiking the trails together establishing memories we recall still today.

We were able to have the next day's breakfast and lunch in the Coffee Shop and this is when we met Madge who along with Ellen had worked many summers there serving the hot biscuits, jams, coffee for breakfast and then the Parkway raised roast beef. Our young son and daughter took a-liking to Madge because she would bring them out many extras to eat so they would have their own plates separate from ours. Also, Ellen entertained them with her wonderful mountain talk using words like "breech dressing" and "milk to drink" . . . what memories!

As a family every summer we would make reservations and return to spend time at our "heaven on earth" to get our "Bluffs Lodge fix" and to renew our spirits. We have yet to miss going to "The Bluffs" since our first surprised stay. Our children have returned several times on their own as adults to stay in the Lodge and to recall their playtime pleasures as children playing on the grassy lawn overlooking the meadows watching deer, turkey, and other wildlife; playing along the American Chestnut split-rail fence areas; playing games under the two large (only one remaining) oak trees with large low reaching branches.

As you can see, our family's footprints are all over Doughton Park with memories that have already lasted a lifetime. We have spent many nights in a pop-up or tent on both sides of Bluffs Camp Grounds and I can just feel it all now as I sit in my Raleigh home reflecting on the very good times we had in "The Bluffs". As we were able to do last year and for many years before, we would like to return to again celebrate our 46th Wedding Anniversary on June 20th , but looks like we will break our tradition this summer. How sad!

After checking weather.com data for Roanoke and Asheville, I think October would be your best bet for avoiding rain.

Personally, I prefer a convertible.
1. The top goes up.
2. I can hear the birds, breeze and bugs.
You miss the sound of nature on a motorcycle.

To persons viewing this article - do not hesitate to head out to the Parkway, in spite of the road problems. The detour takes you up either Hwy 21 or 18 through countryside just as quaint as the parkway & through the county seat of Sparta. Food & shops there are plenty, & in Laurel Springs there are 2 resturants & one is smack dab in the middle of an Antique & more store. It also has a well known "Biker" place. The time is just about 12 min. longer than the parkway. I have been up several times since the 11/1 closing for wall work, & even though the L.S. places were closed in Jan. when I was up, everything was open in Sparta. You can drive some distance on the parkway, but you have to turn around if you do.

Great question!

I make no promises nor predictions on mountain weather. Rain is most likely during those transitional times of year - spring and fall, when the warm and cold air is colliding along the mountains. Late April, May, and into June can be wetter, then during the summer the moisture is related to what comes north from the Gulf of Mexico. It can be wet again later in October and November.

Even when things get damp, you can often avoid the worst of it. It's more likely to rain up high first. Sometimes staying low means staying dry. Some areas get more rain than others - the clouds can't make the climb over the mountains and get stuck along the margins. Fortunately, there are so many great roads to choose from, if it's raining in one direction, riding in the other can solve the problem.

I suggest you always be prepared for a shower. Strange things happen in the mountains and each valley seems to have it's own weather. It's all part of the adventure.

Just a quick note to tell that I was there last week and the boardwalk is a work in progress; will be wonderful when It's complete; as it happened, there was enough of the trail that was blacktopped that we could roll my mom's wheelchair around for a good distance so it worked out OK for us.

Rick,
Beautiful photos! It was chilly last weekend! We had light sleet/snow for a whole 5 min Saturday afternoon…just enough to sit up & take notice of.
Riding this weekend?

While some of the leaves have already dropped at the higher points, the show continues to evolve at the lower elevations and it seems to change every day. Continuing further south from Graveyard Fields, I've seen some nice color descending to the US 74 exit near Waynesville and the area around Soco Gap (US 19) near Maggie Valley.

This year doesn't seem to be one of those where all the leaves came in at once in one big bang - rather, it's a more gradual turning which is prolonging the enjoyment. If you're still planning your visit, there's a lot of green left on the trees in places so you're sure to have plenty to enjoy. I saw some great color passing through the Linville area a couple days ago.

Weather looks great for a weekend picnic! There are picnic areas at Rocky Knob, mp 169, that's probably the closest one to Mabry Mill. Check out Virtual Blue Ridge's parkway tour for more info on all the different picnic areas - http://www.virtualblueridge.com/parkway_tour/.

My friend and I are riding down from Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada in the middle of September to ride (hopefully,) the full length of the Parkway. We do not have an agenda or time limit. Just go and ride. Any suggestions that might help us along the way?
Thanks,

Funny you should ask about the access trail.....I was just at the Peaks of Otter just today and they are starting to put down the planking for the first section of boardwalk. the guys working on it said that it is a priority project, but they could not give me any dates. My thinking is that at least part of it may be open by Sept. 20.

Traveling the Parkway in a motorhome sounds like a great trip! You'll want to double check all tunnel heights to make sure you're RV will fit. We also have information on our site about camping on the Parkway. Another good resource is the free maps. Happy Travels!

[...] Be extra mindful during the early morning and at dusk, this is when deer are often active. One good thing to note is that a deer’s eyes will often reflect light to give them away when they aren’t in plain sight. The Blue Ridge Parkway Journeys blog has some good tips for avoiding deer collisions.
Sadly, I have to agree with Hugh. As a former NPS seasonal, I actually heard a disabled vet say he took a seasonal job so he wouldn't have to "work on the weekends." While I believe our veterans deserve the best, but vet points for NPS jobs should be used once -- any other hire/promotion after that should be based on merit, and that alone.

I was proud to serve my country as an NPS Ranger. NPS needs to go back to the days of Stephen Mather and put more rangers in the field & less bureucrats in District Offices and WASO.

As you are facing the lake from the rear of the lodge the boardwalk construction is to your right. It lies between Abbott Lake and the Parkway Motoroad itself.
